A sure sign of spring

The first sign of spring isn’t flowers blooming or seeing a robin in your yard. It’s when the first ship comes into the Port of Green Bay! But when will it arrive? If you’re feeling lucky, then you’ll want to make your guess when the first ship will arrive in port, kicking off the 2016 shipping season. The person who submits the most accurate guess will get boasting rights for the year and a nice prize package, too.

“The start of the shipping season depends more on weather than an exact date,” said Dean Haen, Director of the Port and Resource Recovery Department. “We thought we’d have some fun with it by holding a contest. It brings attention to the ships that come into port, too. People get excited about it, or look up the name of the ship to see where it came from. That’s what we want them to do.”

The port has once again partnered with the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) for the contest. “The contest has been running for more than 10 years and people have had fun with it,” said Brenda Krainik, Director of Marketing for the CVB. “We usually get some very creative answers so we are looking forward to see what people guess this year.”

No matter if you plan to study weather patterns or just “wing it” to make your prediction, entering a guess couldn’t be easier. Just click here to make your guess. The person who comes closest to the date and time of the first ship’s arrival will win a prize package from the Port of Green Bay which includes passage for two on the Soo Locks Boat Tour and a free night stay at the Soo Locks Lodge & Suites in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
