Coast Guard unit discusses increase in false distress calls around Lake Michigan, Great Lakes

Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee hosted a media availability July 11 to answer questions about the increase in false distress and probable hoax calls, and to provide a rare glimpse inside the sector command center.

As mentioned in a June 29 news release (available here), during the start of the boating season, there was a substantial increase in the number of distress calls across the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan, compared to 2016. Many of these calls have been determined likely to be false distress calls, which are those made either by phone or over a marine radio by a person claiming to have witnessed a potential distress situation or to be in distress, in danger or in an emergency situation.
