Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority announces new board member
The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority (DWCPA) welcomed Bryan Powell as the newest member of the DWCPA Board of Directors, for a four-year term. The Wayne County Commission unanimously voted in favor of the appointment earlier this month.
Upon receiving the appointment, Powell said: “I have worked in the maritime trades for most of my life, in various capacities, and am very passionate about the industry, especially the role the port authority plays in economic development for the Great Lakes region. I’m honored to receive this appointment and proud to serve the people of Detroit and Wayne County and the Michigan maritime community.”
Powell serves as Assistant Vice President of the Seafarers International Union (SIU), an organization representing professional U.S. merchant mariners sailing aboard U.S.-flag vessels in the deep sea, Great Lakes and inland waterways. Powell started his career with SIU in 1993 when he attended the apprenticeship program and later came ashore to work as a union official.
In addition, Powell serves as Assistant Vice President for the SIU-affiliated Seafarers Entertainment and Allied Trades Union , along with representing the United Industrial, Service Transportation, Professional and Government Works of North America. Appointed by the George W. Bush administration in 2003 and 2005, Powell served on the U.S. Department of Labor’s Special Industry Committee, where he was responsible for advising the Secretary of Labor on economic policy related to application of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
“My experience within the labor sector will be particularly useful in the DWCPA’s efforts to advance job placement and exposure within the maritime industry,” said Powell.
Powell is an active member of a number of organizations, including the Propeller Club of the United States, National Defense Transportation Association, Labor and Employment Relations Association and the Society for Human Resources Management.
“The appointment of Bryan Powell to the port authority board is a very positive move for our organization,” said John Loftus, Executive Director at the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. “Bryan’s deep and broad understanding of the maritime industry in the Great Lakes as well as the rest of the country, and his local labor connections and national political reach through the Seafarers International Union, will be a real asset.”
