Great Lakes Fire Training Center closing by year’s end
The following statement was released by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Public Affairs:
“After a thorough evaluation of the increased availability of fire training centers nationwide, the U.S Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration is taking steps to wind down operations at its Great Lakes Fire Training Center (FTC) by the end of Fiscal Year 2016. Originally implemented in 1979, when limited training was available, the program offered important training to improve and expand shipboard firefighting for U.S. seaman and first responders. For nearly four decades, the FTC has trained thousands, making our ports, waterways and the vessels serving them safer.”
