Minister Marc Garneau speaks at opening of Seaway’s 2017 season

Minister Marc Garneau addressed the crowd today, March 20, at the official opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway’s 59th navigation season. The ceremony was held at the St. Lambert Lock in Quebec, the first lock in the Seaway system. It featured the unveiling of a monumental work of art work created as a tribute to Canada’s 150th anniversary and the 375th of the City of Montreal.

The original artwork extends across the forward facade of the accommodation block of the opening vessel, CSL St-Laurent, and commemorates the important roles of Canada Steamship Lines, the St. Lawrence River and the marine transportation industry in the history and growth of both Canada and the City of Montreal.

The artwork was created by Montreal artist Beyung in collaboration with three other urban artists—Ankh One, Benny Wilding and FONKi—and is the first of its kind to be displayed on a Canadian commercial bulker.

Other speakers at the opening were: Jean D’Amour, Minister for Maritime Affairs for the Province of Québec; Louis Martel, President and CEO of the CSL Group Inc. (as of April, 2017); Craig Middlebrook, Deputy Administrator, U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation; and Terence Bowles, President and CEO, The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.
