U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to prepare EIS for Chicago
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago District is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to determine the potential impacts of the Dredged Material Management Plan for the Chicago Area Waterway System. A Notice of Intent for this action was published in the Federal Register December 28, 2018 (FR 2018-28344).
Based on public concerns and comments received through previous scoping outreach, at stakeholder meetings and during public workshops, the Chicago District has decided to complete an EIS rather than an Environmental Assessment. An EIS is the most robust tool available to us for analyzing any potential adverse impacts to the natural and human environment under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The project team has refined the list of potentially suitable sites for a new sediment management facility based on continued technical analyses and evaluation of public feedback received throughout this process.
As part of the EIS scoping process, the Chicago District would appreciate receiving additional input on the following:
- The inclusion of a vertical expansion alternative and any related adverse impacts to the human and natural environment;
- Other reasonable potential courses of action that have not previously been shared; and
- Other potential for adverse impacts to the human and natural environment that have not previously been shared.
